Dear Candidate

Thank you for your interest in Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and these fantastic opportunities to join our Board as a Non-Executive Director or Associate Non-Executive Director.

As an anchor institution providing acute healthcare for around 250,000 people in Barnsley and the surrounding areas, we are a high-performing district general hospital with a CQC ‘Good’ overall. As a member of the Barnsley Place Partnership and the South Yorkshire Integrated Care System, we play an important role in making a difference to the health and wellbeing of our communities in collaboration with our system partners.

We are immensely proud of the commitment of our colleagues to ensuring a strong and sustainable future for our organisation, which is highly valued by our local communities. We recently reset our ambitions for 2022-2027, and we look forward to the next phase of our strategy as we aim to build on our achievements by supporting and developing our people to deliver our mission of providing the best possible care for the people of Barnsley and beyond, at all stages of their life. Our latest NHS Staff Survey results saw us listed as the best for Acute Trusts in England for compassionate leadership, flexible working, and teamworking, and we continue to focus on becoming the best place to work by investing in a broad range of health and wellbeing options for our colleagues.

We are seeking to appoint two values-driven and inspiring Non-Executive Directors and one Associate Non-Executive Director to our engaged, dynamic, and values-led Unitary Board. These are exciting opportunities to share your talents and make a positive difference to the wellbeing of our communities and staff at a critical time. You will work with our Board and Council of Governors to provide scrutiny, support, and challenge as we continue to build on our previous work to improve our services and deliver holistic care.

In all three appointments we are seeking strategic leaders with Board level or equivalent experience gained in complex, changing, and multi-stakeholder environments. To complement our existing team, we are interested in hearing from senior leaders in the private, public, or third sector who offer experience in one or more of the following areas: finance, people and culture, innovation, digital, partnerships, integration, customer experience, and leadership. Previous Non-Executive experience will be beneficial for our full Non-Executive roles. Our Associate Non-Executive Director will add additional diversity of insight and experience to our Board and we welcome interest from aspiring Non-Executives seeking to broaden their governance experience.

For all roles we warmly welcome applications from candidates from diverse communities, and we are committed to developing a truly inclusive culture. These are exciting, rewarding, and complex positions, with the opportunity to shape the experience and outcomes for our colleagues and patients, reduce health inequalities, and improve the health and wellbeing of our populations.

I hope you will take the opportunity to read more about our work through this website. I would also like to invite you to join me, Dr Richard Jenkins, our CEO, and other colleagues and Governors, at a webinar on 27 February at 5pm where you can hear more about our journey and these roles and where we can answer your questions. If this is of interest, please email with your details to barnsleynonexecroles@gatenbysanderson.com.

If you are interested in finding out more about these roles, please contact our advising consultants at GatenbySanderson to discuss your interest and experience further: Isha Hussain, Laura Cubillo-Aparicio, Niamh Blair or Emma Pickup via barnsleynonexecroles@gatenbysanderson.com.

I look forward to meeting you during the process.
